Ayako Shirasaki - Jazz Pianist & Composer

Combining the hard swinging bebop language of Bud Powell with the sophisticated harmonic elegance of Bill Evans, but with a brilliant creativity all her own, pianist Ayako Shirasaki has established herself as one of New York City’s finest jazz pianists.

Jazz pianist and composer Ayako Shirasaki has been playing the piano since the age of 5. She began performing in jazz clubs at the age of 12, and has won numerous piano competitions in her native Japan. Extremely versatile, Ayako majored in classical music at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and performed as a classical pianist for several years after graduation. But the love of the jazz idiom instilled by her father from the age of five won out, and Ayako soon returned to her first love, winning in 1995 second prize in the prestigious First Annual Heineken Jazz Competition.

Ayako moved to New York City in 1997 and earned a masters degree from Manhattan School of Music, where she studied piano with Kenny Barron. Her debut CD, “Existence,” featuring drummer Lewis Nash was released in 2003. Ayako is a three-time finalist in the 2004 – 2006 Great American Jazz Piano Competitions.

In 2005, Ayako also performed at the Kennedy Center as a finalist in the Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Piano Competition, and released her second CD, “Musically Yours.” Ayako was a guest on Marian McPartland’s radio show “Piano Jazz,” which was broadcast in the Fall of 2006 on NPR. In April 2006, her long-awaited first solo piano CD, “Home Alone,” was released.

After a few years of maternity leave, Ayako was invited to perform at the “1st International Jazz Solo Piano Festival” in 2009 in Hamburg, Munich and Berlin, Germany. Soon after, she made a 2nd trip to Germany to give 8 concerts including a piano solo concert at the prestigious “Laeiszhalle” in Hamburg, the live recording of which became a new release entitled “Falling Leaves – Live in Hamburg” in 2010 that was twice nominated for inclusion in the “Best of 2010” list by members of the Jazz Journalists Association.

In 2011 Ayako performed at the festival in Lucerne, Switzerland. Classical piano star Maurizio Pollini, who, after hearing Ayako perform his spontaneous request for "Sophisticated Lady," remarked, "Fast fingers! Beautiful!”

In August 2013, Ayako's long-awated piano trio album, "Some Other Time" (Jan Matthies Records) was released.
She has completed Japan Tour "Some Other Time' in July 2013 and Europe tour 2015.

Ayako has performed at many of NYC’s jazz clubs including The Kitano, Blue Note, Smalls and Dizzy’s Club as well as concerts in Japan & Europe.
